Metro Jaya Police Arrest Three Suspects in CCTV Vandalism

Metro Jaya Police have identified suspects allegedly involved in damaging closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government on August 27, 2026.

Metro Jaya Police Public Relations Head Commissioner Budi Hermanto said the General Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimum) had arrested three suspects allegedly involved in damaging the Jakarta Provincial Government's CCTV cameras.

"There has been a new development with the arrest of three additional people. All three played roles in damaging the monitoring facilities in front of the DPR/MPR RI Building," he said on Wednesday (9/2).

Budi assured the public that Jakarta is currently safe and stable. He urged residents not to be easily provoked by information circulating on social media, particularly hoaxes, misinformation, and content generated using artificial intelligence.

He said Metro Jaya Police had taken several measures to curb the spread of misleading information, including issuing warnings via direct messages and labeling content deemed misleading as hoaxes.

"Although we have seen a lot of hoaxes, misinformation, and AI-generated content circulating, this will not distract the investigation and inquiry teams from carrying out their duties," he noted.

Meanwhile, Metro Jaya Police General Criminal Investigation Directorate Head Commissioner Iman Imanuddin disclosed the results of the investigation into the vandalism of dozens of CCTV locations owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government.

Based on investigators' findings, the monitoring cameras were allegedly damaged deliberately to eliminate evidence and obstruct the police investigation.

"This group was not part of the protesters who were voicing their aspirations. They were a group of rioters who deliberately came to cause damage. We identified indications of an organized mobilization of people," he said.

Earlier, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stressed that the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to respect people's right to express their views through protests as part of the democratic process. However, freedom of expression cannot be used as an excuse for vandalism or acts of violence.

"If they can be identified, we will certainly take further action, because such acts are absolutely not permitted," he said.
